We expect a wide-ranging audience for the series. It is our primary hope that it will help introduce many foreign readers to the world of Korean literature. The series is especially intened to serve English-speaking students enrolled in Korean studies programs and all who need translations of Korean literature, as well as those who may wish to compare their own translations with the translations of fellow trnslators in order to find new and better ways of translating. Korean readers studying advanced English can also benefit from reading these bilingual editions : the experience may help them to recognize the mystery of true mastery of the literany use of language.

귀천

 

나 하늘로 돌아가리라.

새벽빛 와 닿으면 스러지는

이슬 더불어 손에 손을 잡고,

 

나 하늘로 돌아가리라.

노을빛 함께 단둘이서

기슭에서 놀다가 구름 손짓하며는,

 

나 하늘로 돌아가리라.

아름다운 이 세상 소풍 끝내는 날,

가서, 아름다웠다라고 말하리라 ……

I'll go back to heaven again.

Hand in hand with the dew

that melts at a touch of the dawning day,

 

I'll go back to heaven again.

With the dusk, together, just we two,

at a sign from a cloud after playing on the slopes

 

I'll go back to heaven again.

At the end of my outing to this beautiful world

I'll go back and say : It was beautiful …

 

* The title of this poem, the Chinese characters Kwi (return) and Ch'on (Heaven), gave its name to the tiny cafe in Seoul's Insadong neighborhood run by Mok Sun Ok, the poet's wife. ("The smallest cafe in the world," the poet claims in a poem not included in this selection.) This is the poet's best-known poem, it has several times been set to music.
